It is a traditional game in Korea that can be enjoyed by all ages. It started out as a tool for fortune-telling. Yut means playing with four wooden sticks.

윷놀이는 남녀노소 누구나 즐길 수 있는 한국의 전통 놀이입니다. 길흉을 점치는 점술 도구로 시작되었습니다. 윷은 나무막대기 넷을 가지고 논다는 뜻입니다.

When playing the game of Yut, you throw Yut sticks and use a pawn to compete on the 29- circled Yut board. Players take turns throwing Yut.

윷놀이는 윶가락을 던지고 말을 사용하여 29개의 동그라미를 그린 윷판에서 승부를 겨루는 놀이 입니다. 놀이의 참가자는 돌아가면서 윷을 던집니다.

One side up, three sides down, Do. Two sides up, two sides down, Gae.

하나가 젖혀지고 세개가 엎어지면 도입니다. 두개가 젖혀지고 두개가 엎어지면 개입니다.

Three sides up, one side down, Geol. All four sides up, Yut

세개가 젖혀지고 한개가 엎어지면 걸입니다. 모두 젖혀지면 윷입니다.

All four sides down, Mo. If you get Yut or Mo, you have another chance to throw the Yut sticks. Plus, if the opponent's pawn is already in the circled area in which you have moved, you can take the opponent's pawn out of the board and throw the sticks once more.

모두 엎어지면 모입니다. 윷이나 모가 나오면 한번 더 던질 수 있는 기회가 주어집니다. 만약 끗수대로 이동하였을때 상대망 말이 있는 칸에 도착하면, 상대방 말을 판에서 아웃시키고 한번 더 던질 수 있습니다. Photo by Sunwoo Yoon,(www. miricanvas.com)
